Worldbuilding Made Easy

For some authors, worldbuilding can be overwhelming. How can you possibly come up with all the cultures, economies, and people that populate your story?

For others, worldbuilding can be a sand trap. How can I possibly just tell the story of just one person when I have these thousands of characters in my world?

Thankfully there’s an easy way to organize worldbuilding info and make it so that you don’t go too overboard.

During the last stream, we did a worldbuilding exercise. I explained the “BIG to SMALL” worldbuilding outline system, and then chat voted on a story that we would give a universe to.

Chat voted on this one: An underwater fantasy kingdom where all oceans have gods, and one god kidnaps the other.

See the explanation of the system here,
as well as what we came up with for the story!

After that, we wrote this prompt: You order something from Amazon, but when the package comes, it has an anonymous treasure map inside.

You can read our story here.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:30pm-10:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

And you missed the stream, you can still watch them on the YouTube channel or watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!

Scott Wilson is the author of the novel Metl: The ANGEL Weapon,
forthcoming March 2019.
