Writing a Story for National Geographic’s #PlanetOrPlastic Contest

A few weeks ago National Geographic announced a writing contest on WattPad. Writers were invited to create short stories based on images of the harmful effects of pollution on sea life.

We thought it might be fun to enter. But of course, we’d have to leave the deciding of the story to Twitch chat!

After a bunch of polls where chat voted on a ton of different ideas, we finally whittled it down to this one: A merperson trapped inside a plastic bottle.

You can see the process behind our story here,
or just scroll down to read it.

You can read the story on Wattpad here.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 7:30pm-11:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

And you missed the stream, you can still watch them on the YouTube channel, or watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!

Scott Wilson is the author of the novel Metl: The ANGEL Weapon,
forthcoming March 2019.
