Writing Stream Recap: Ca$hing in on $EQUEL$

Since today was special guest Abbey’s last day to join the stream for a while, we decided to make it special.

Instead of writing a new story, we looked over all of the stories we’d written over the past two weeks and narrowed it down to the three we liked best. Then we held a vote in the chat to see which one we would write a sequel to.

The three choices were these:

#1. Christmas curse
#2. Dragon kidnaps a prince by mistake
#3. Hamurai the hamster samurai

In the end, the winner was…

#2. Dragon kidnaps a prince by mistake. If you haven’t read the original story then be sure to check it out.

Honestly this was the one I was dreading writing the sequel to the most. I felt like the original story wrapped things up so nicely. What would a sequel be about?

So we delved into what makes a good sequel and came up with two factors: (1) a new conflict and (2) upping the stakes. If we had the same problem as the original, but perhaps just introduced new characters, then it wouldn’t be too interesting. We needed to take the original characters and put them in a new situation, while still staying true to who they were.

As usual, chat blew me away with suggestions. This prompt ended up having much more meat on the bone than I’d ever imagined. I could see us writing a whole bunch more stories based on this prompt in the future.

You can read the sequel here.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 7:30pm-9:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

And you missed the stream, you can still watch it here (apologies for the beginning being cut off) on rerun until Twitch deletes it.

Hope to see you next time, friend!
