Writing a “Creepy-Cute” Story Prompt

“The scent of rotting corpses dances merrily around the walls of The Lilac Collection for Children.”

During the last stream, a subscriber picked that we write a prompt based on this “creepy/cute” YouTube video by Melanie Martinez.

And since we were joined by special guest Abbey, we decided to have her write it! She wrote the first draft, then we edited it together to make it shine.

Watch the full video here for the awesome voting/editing process, or scroll down for the story.

Here’s what we came up with together after editing:

The scent of rotting corpses dances merrily around the walls of The Lilac Collection for Children. Pink castle bastions line the premises, surrounded by acres of swamp green trees with neverending eyes. No one who has ever entered before has escaped. Not for lack of trying, of course, but simply because their will to leave had been extracted.

As I bump up the path to my new “educational prison” a.k.a. school, my hatred toward my parents grows with every groan of the bus wheels. It’s made even worse by the fact that the whole damn thing is pink and sky blue all over, like two creamsicles melted together, left forgotten on the ground after their parents were too busy arguing over car payments instead of just enjoying the picnic we’d been looking forward to for weeks.

Not that I’m projecting or anything.

At least I’m alone on this clown-barf bus. Just me and the driver, with thirty-two empty seats between us. Yes, I sat all the way in the back. And yes, I did count the number of seats. Twice. Bite me.

For what feels like the past hour, there’s been nothing but trees outside, zooming by like big globules of moss. So when something that isn’t toilet-vomit suddenly appears out the window, I can’t help but notice.

Oh god. We’re here. I can see the peaks of the Pepto Bismol castle in the distance, with Tums-colored flags flapping against the sky. Perfect, I guess, since I’m gonna need a lot of meds to get through my senior year here.

The bus slows down and stops outside what looks like an iron-barred gate. When the guard steps out of his turret, I can’t help but laugh so hard I spray the window with spit. He’s wearing a rabbit head with a frilly collar and full-body gray uniform, like a guard to fairy tale hell. Or heaven, I guess, if that’s your kink.

After exchanging some words with the driver, the bunny-headed weirdo waves us on, and the gates open, letting the bus through. After wiping my blessed liquids off the window with my sleeve, I catch a glimpse of something before we leave it behind us. There’s a bunny statue on either side of the gate: two stone rabbits, one the color of a pale rose clutching a syringe between its paws, the other a soft sky blue, holding a large pencil in front of its body like a cane. Both of them have black eyes that always made them look like they were watching you.

Sigh. I can’t believe my parents sold me to an overpriced furry school.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you join us on Twitch.

And you missed the stream, you can still watch them on the YouTube channel or watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!
