Fixing up a Fight Scene – Story Surgeon

Fight scenes may be cool in movies, but they’re notoriously hard to write in books.

So how do you write one that’s just as exciting as anything you’d see on the screen?

Let’s find out by editing a viewer’s fight scene together!

During the last stream, viewer Dragonflyghter submitted their story to be revised by the Story Surgeon. They’d written their first draft of a book, and there was a fight scene in it that they were unsure about.

Writing a fight scene is very different from choreographing one. Only about 10% of the text should be action, and 90% should be description: the character’s thoughts, emotions, strategies, feelings, etc.

That may sound crazy, but it makes sense when you see it in practice!

Watch us read the story, explain what needs to be changed,
then read the rewrite here!

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you join us on Twitch.

And you missed the stream, you can still watch them on the YouTube channel or watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!
