Writing Haiku About Embarrassing College Photos

They say it’s best to embrace your past, learn from it, and move on to live your best possible life.

So what better way to embrace your cringe-worthy past than by having a bunch of strangers write haiku poems about embarrassing college photos?

During the last stream, we had our fourth photo haiku-caption challenge. (See the last ones here.)

Since my college friend/roommate Gloves was visiting Japan, I roped him into joining the stream. We wanted to do something fun and easy on the stream, but something that also related to Gloves in some way.

So I spent some time digging into the dark depths of my hard drive and found some old college photos. I chose the three funniest/most embarrassing ones, and then on stream chat wrote haiku about them. After each photo we voted on which were best, and at the end the winner got a fabulous prize!

See Gloves’s origin story and watch the challenge here,
or
scroll down to see some highlights.

Here’s the photos we captioned:

Photo #1: Gloves Dressed as a Thin Hagrid Who is Also a Spy?
(Be sure to watch the video to get the story behind this one!)

Here’s some of the haiku highlights for this photo:

College-bound werewolf
Becomes my roommate, of course.
I am friend, not food.
-Capricy

He permed his hair to
Get a girl. What an
Unfortunate curl
-Capricy

Cronies amassing
At the bus signs they gather
For a forlorn cause
-xenonquark996

Rockstar killin’ it with his mojo
Stalking Scott’s crush

A rockstar prepares,
A stealth mission awaits him,
To aid his creep friend
-RealSayakaMaizono

Hagrid pushes on,
The layoffs hit Hogwarts hard,
Now he stalks cute girls
-RealSayakaMaizono

Photo #2: A car that just happens to be wrapped in newspaper
(Again, be sure to watch the video to get the story behind this one!)

Here’s some of the haiku highlights for this photo:

A gaggle of men
Giggling in the lot
Tarring and feathering a friend’s beloved car
-xenonquark996

Driving down the street
Cop sees a peculiar sight
“News sure travels fast”
-cozyrogers

“Need to work, rockstar?
Have no way to travel far?
Paper mache car!”
-cozyrogers

Oh my god, oh my lord, they sure cover every door.
My old car is now a joke
All my friends sure are all dorks.
-RegulusXI

A college project
A social experiment
To find my dumb friends
-RealSayakaMaizono

Laborious prankster
Layers of paper made a
Safer, sick racer
-JebusDota

Photo #3: Myself, Gloves, Abbey and our roommate dressed up in 80s outfits
(You DEFINITELY want to watch the video to get the story behind this one!)

Here’s some of the haiku highlights for this photo:

Flashdance dance party
Has nothing on a flashback
Of embarrassment
-Capricy

Teens pose by a car
DDR taken too far
What a shining star
-RealSayakaMaizono

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Rapping through his neighborhood
Along with his friends
-RealSayakaMaizono

Posin’ posers postin’ flows
Advanced dance enchants
-JebusDota

I got in one little dance
And my mom got scared
Now I live in Japan
-JebusDota

Those were some great poems! But in the end the winner was…

…RealSayakaMaizono! Congratulations! As their prize, they requested that I draw the character Sayaka Maizono from the Danganronpa video game series.

I may have taken a bit of artistic license and added another one
of RealSayakaMaizono’s other favorite characters in the background.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 7:30pm-11:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).
