Living Inside a Game That’s Being Speedrun

What if, whenever we played a video game, instead of controlling pixels on a screen, we were actually controlling that character in a faroff world?

And, what if, the controller of one of those characters was a speedrunner?

That sounds like it could make for a good story!

During the last stream, chat voted that we write this prompt by Direwolf202: Video games are real worlds. You are the avatar of a speedrunner.

This was a tough prompt to crack. It’s a fun idea to think about, sure, but actually writing a story with a beginning, middle and end for it was tough.

Thankfully chat brainstormed a lot of cool ideas: what if the speedrunner was like a superhero? What if their glitches messed with the world? What if they ended up becoming the villain?

Somehow we managed to combine all of those ideas into one story that features one of my favorite games of all time: Zelda: A Link to the Past.

You can read our story here.

Or you can watch a quick video of us writing/reading it here.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 7:30pm-10:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

And you missed the stream, you can stillĀ watch Rubbish to Published, the writing exercises, or the writing prompts on YouTube, orĀ watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!
