Writers CONduit: Describing Random World Locations with Geoguessr

As part of the Writers CONduit online convention, I ran a panel where we played Geoguessr and wrote descriptions for the random locations.

How did it turn out? Read on!

GeoGuessr is a website where you’re thrown into a random spot in the world on Google Maps streetview, and you have to try and guess where you are.

During the last stream for the Writers CONduit online convention, chat and I played a game of GeoGuessr, and just like when we’ve done this before, we were given five random locations anywhere in the world.

For each one, we had to write a short description of the area, trying to make it as vivid and detailed as possible.

Here’s some highlights of what me/chat came up with for each location, with some of my favorite phrases bolded.

Location #1: Los Cerros de Mavicure – Guainia, Colombia

Me:
Single stones the size of volcanoes stuck out from the earth like fossilized ships, their voyages come to an eternal end. The winds carved their rocky edges smooth, and now the rivers were the ones travelling around them.

JebusDota:
A small clutter of mounds like a patch of bad acne. Trees refused to grow on them, leaving them brown and with streaks of sediment like stretch marks. One mound dared to kiss the sky, the others standing proud directly beside the river.

EricaDeel:
The two mounds rose from the Earth, pert and curvy as a woman’s breast. Their smooth velvety curves hinted at the presence of an ancient dark land goddess, bestowing her life fluids upon the land and living creatures below.

Ravynwhyt:
Smoky hills lurk in the clouds, while the river lazily weaves through the trees.

RealSayakaMaizono:
Rounded rocks catch and cut a hollow shroud of cloud, they pierce proud, while the river runs aground. Foamy violent water wash within, those cracked stone shins, luscious flakes too pure of sin. Tourists gaze, horizon unending, grass grows where marbled man dared not tread, this retreat unsaid.

Location #2: Mauna Loa Summit Cairn – Hawaii

Me:
A metallic junkyard of forgotten, broken stones. No hope to grow into mountains, only waiting to be crushed into blacker, smaller fragments.

Twilight_Researcher:
A craggy landscape, battered by wind and dust, lingering in the long-forgotten memories of life long past. Smooth obsidian carpeted part of the land, a strong reminder of the molten fury of volcanoes long past that once ravaged the landscape, their fiery fury carving through as the winds now do.

AsuuneSeastar:
A blackened landscape of rocks and long dead lava flows stretched on for miles. Not a single bit of vegetation could be found in sight.

CozyRogers:
Brittle, grayscale earth cracked like glass underfoot. Sunbaked and blackened, streaks of glazed obsidian spread like rippling rivers over a barren, lifeless moonscape, evoking memories of meteors and dinosaurs.

RealSayakaMaizono:
Beholders beat burning toes over barren, broken, stygian coal. The empty hollow cry of stone humbles mortal minds, pebbles play and pray on passersby. Structures, unnatural and unknown, hold secrets sly, religious weight or mere mad ravings, as craven god’s cry. Let darkness cast upon the night and conjure evil’s delight.

Location #3: Nan Madol – Nanwei, Pohnpei Island, Micronesia

Itanshi:
Stone bricks gathered by the river seeped with the blood, sweat and tears of the ancients, now home to common folks surviving on the widening river.

Twilight_Researcher:
A rippling river, clear as freshly polished gems, and glowing in the sunlight as rich quartz. Bordered on both sides by stones ancient and worn, arranged by human hands in an age long past, ancient temples and civilizations lost and abandoned to time, reclaimed by jungle.

EricaDeel:
The calm and clear water lilts and flows down the river like the musical stylings of a harpist delicately rippling over her strings. Verdant lands flourish on either side of this “fountain of youth;” nothing is decayed here, nothing browning. Only the sweet notes of Vivaldi’s “Spring” play here.

CozyRogers:
Untamed. Untainted. In this place, danger and beauty mingle like lovers on a tropical honeymoon. Ancient rocken structures and natural palms crown a river so clear as to be cleansing. Floating above, the blue sky knows not of hardship.

RealSayakaMaizono:
Heaven holds but great revere for this vista, so crystal clear. Mankind manifest fight for flights of fancy, of dances between sweltered summer leaves, to tread like thieves. Frantic soaking clothes and pantyhose expose, of stress deposed. For few who find such purchase of paradise, the gorgeous green invites, excites and opens hearts bright.

Location #4: ΠΑΡΑΛΙΑ ΜΥΡΙΝΑ – Mirina, Greece

Me
Tufts of spongy, spiky moss bubbled along the curves of the desert. The ocean breeze, a mere blue dream in the impossible distance, whispered through the cracked, heated air – never enough to satisfy, only to sustain.

Ravynwhyt:
Micrograsses slowly melting away into the sand. Sun beating down, the heat melting the very air you breathe. Smelling of dust and lost hope. On the horizon the sea teases with lost dreams long forgotten.

EricaDeel:
Who knew that dirt and sand could tangle together and create desert dust bunnies? Whipped together by wind, baked in the desert heat, these abominations rise from the surface in snarls of blistered moss and petrified nettles.

CozyRogers:
Mother Earth got herself a buzz cut. Little tufts of chartreuse hair have conquered the mountains here. Grounded remnants of rocky human structures, no more than a single stone high, echo the whimpers of the people who must once have lived here. This world is yellow, never quite green.

Justintoonz:
Clumps of crusted crops dust the sweeping landscape. The sun watches over this barren wasteland like an angry tyrant whose fingers grace this land with heat and range. The faint scent of salt and brine whispers of the distant sea off on the horizon.

RealSayakaMaizono:
Dust tumbles, truckers travel, as tufts of tenacious turfs wrestle for life, for water’s sight. The broken numbing night betrays, the horizon calls anew that oft known curse, that beaming burning sun coerced. Few who know the ways of these lands may traverse, of no small comforts, but the lifeblood that flows tight within their canteens.

Location #5: Kaho‘olawe – Hawaiian Island

Me:
The razor winds seared across the feathered plains, revealing the rusty blood brush beneath the greenery. Rolling all the way to the horizon where the mountain stood sentinel, breathing in all toward it.

Ravynwhyt:
Grassy rocks litter the terrain. Mountains in the distance beckon. Whispering promises of the icy air and lush life contained in their boundaries.

CozyRogers:
A storm cloud rolls over a palette of greens, browns, yellows and reds; a painting without a canvas. From one mountain to another, the winds pass like signal fires, warning of the something yet to come.

Twilight_Researcher:
A menageries of colors dotted the landscape, rich browns, dried yellows, and fresh greens bled into each other as a kaleidoscope. Far past the shin-high vegetation on the sloped plains stood a faint mountain, its gentle slopes piercing the clouds with an age that seemed to defy description.

RealSayakaMaizono:
Emptied expanse, this cliff that holds the world, murky fog casts lands and souls unknown, a human epilogue. One lone spirit stands proud, his gaze unwound, his presence confound. As duplicit winds whisper, his statued figure remains, as a watcher, an eternal guardian.
