Describing Random World Locations with Geoguessr

GeoGuessr is a website where you are thrown into a random spot in the world on Google Maps streetview, and you have to try and guess where you are.

It’s fun to play just by itself, to see how close you can get, but it’s even more fun when you put a spin on it: writing a description of each random area you’re given.

During the last stream, chat and I played a game of GeoGuessr. Just like when we’ve done this before, we were given five random locations anywhere in the world, and we had to guess where they were.

And for each one, we had to write a short description of the area, trying to make it as vivid and detailed as possible.

Here’s five highlights of what me/chat came up with for each location:

Location #1: Jammu and Kashmir (Northern India/Pakistan)

The shadow cliffs loomed tall above the small breadbox of a house. Staring down at it, every breath of wind that blew through its cracks and craters seemed to whisper You are only allowed to be here because I like you.
—Me

The peak of Mt. Farseer gazed over the ever-clear blue water. It wore Lake Cerulean like a plated battle skirt, protecting its shores from those who would harm it.

Water reflects the sky it sees. Up here in the mountains, the sky is a purified shade of blue; and so the water is too, blue and placid and crisply cold. The rocks are gray and weathered, and stubborn grass pops up between chalky sand. But the building is the most stubborn – a garish yellow, squat, and defiantly square.

The wind carried the scents of dust and moisture as it played through the mountain valleys, dancing past the sienna walled building nestled under the dark dry cliff walls.
—AlyxVixen

Jagged forms of gravel meet, their rocky peaks host a retreat. Within those flat plains, flows a river – like lifeblood through veins. Nestled within rolling hills, a strange dwelling rests, giving host to touring guests. Mankind’s effort – boring holes through thick sheets of stone, allow us to venture this place unknown.

Location #2: South Australia

The reef lay under the water like a thousand christmas trees piled on each other, sharp and pointy and all the colors of fire. Ornamental cuttlefish shimmered as they swam by, passing from one infinite gorge of deep blue to a neverending canyon of darkness.
—Me

The sun rays pierced the infinite dark blue of the alien under-sea, lighting up the reef in an array of the colors of autumn. The only sound was that of the opalescent cuttlefish, gently swooping in and out among the underwater fur trees, searching for food. The rest was silence, weighted in water and removed from the waves crashing above.
—EricaDeel

Under the warm aquatic sky. Fish of all species spread watery wings and fly. Hoping for fresh food soon, as they delve into the depths of the lagoon. This seems like a place with little strife as plantation and plankton seem satisfied with life. Distance from society thriving underwater, completely blind to the above is horror and slaughter.

The coral was an exuberant carnival of pastel colors, home to a vibrant palace between ocean and earth. It was a masterstroke of imagination that God breathed onto an empty canvas. It was a divine city conjured by the immortal dreams of a thousand storytellers. It was simply… Atlantis.
—WhiteDinamo

The soft coral blanketed the floor like a submerged forest, its lovecraftian denizens hunting amongst the canopy. The surrounding waters a featureless blue wall hiding other darker things.

Location #3: Indonesia

The wooden walkway ended in a balcony in front of a view of a younger earth. Trees growing out of trees growing out of bushes up to the sky, drunk on sunlight like wine, too high to even see the tips of. A green snowstorm of leaves, rustling and swaying with each unending call of their hidden residents.
—Me

The narrow, wobbly bridge strung a path through forest. Each step produced a creak, and a sway of timber and rope. Bushy trees shagged its leaves like wild, untamed hair. Branches trembled below. Puddles of murky water splashed. It’s probably a Velociraptor

An army of trees lined the canyon below the makeshift bridge. Not a High King’s regiment of men like an orchard on owned land, lined up with uniformity. But a mercenary army of trunk and branch, a mixed camp of all shape, size, and creed. Evergreens stood tall and proud like northmen, covered in thick bark-like armor. Solid-bodied oaks rested sluggish and crooked, like the well-fed soldiers from Aldwater. And thin, lanky maples, with vines like braids of hair, walked among them, slipping between the branches of foliage more proud and vibrant. Not one of them moved in the breeze. A tired rank of soldiers for hire, taking a long moment to rest between the looming cover of the mountains.
—SIXSIXseve_n

The thicket of trees hugged the narrow bridge as it swayed in the wind high above the ground. The height was no matter, though, because the land lay sight unseen beneath the forest of green. Rafters and ropes spread across the landscape like a seamstress’s loom, weaving in and out of the treetops and holding up the scant woodwork. A tapestry showcasing nature’s creation.
—EricaDeel

Trees covered the heavens above parting as iridescent light descended in gaps amongst them. Ropes swung in the wind as foilage breathed back against it. The whispers of a breeze harmonized with distant chirps.Time itself rested here lying softly amongst the bark and bramble that clung covering ancient rocks.

Location #4: Myanmar/Burma

Golden shrines with sharp peaks, molded as if made of glistening butter, tapered off by the hands of the gods. Each one a dollop of the heavens, plopped around as cookie dough batter on the earthly baking sheet.
—Me

The golden temple rose from the sea of shrines, a holy place reaching for the heavens. The pale sun illuminated them, glistening like crystallized syrup.
—AlyxVixen

A castle of white peers through the golden spires stabbing the sky. Ferocious lions guard the shrines and their inhabitants diligently. A carousel of culture, glimmering richly like honey. A sight to be marveled from the passers-by. These divine structures, lost in meaning to the modern time.
—Dragonflyghter

Countless glistening, golden towers overlook a valley of spotless, tiled marble, its own whiteness marred in reflection of ominous grey skies above. Outstretching towards those dark, violent heavens like thirsty hands in anticipation of the storm’s rain, one gold-plated mountain in particular stands taller than the rest. This is the white-gold city, where Buddha resides.
—cozyrogers

Ornate golden peaks reach tall, within this religious sprawl. Craftsmanship of the gods, honoring gods, surrounds and astounds. Colors mesh in purest form. Gorgeous gold, pearly white, shining statues, plain in sight. A holy sight, where followers gather, to make prayers and vows among the clatter of travellers. A solitary, towering spire waits, encompassing fates. Glistening light touches heavens, amid the night.

Location #5: Papua New Guinea

More litter on the gravel-and-dirt ground than grass. Dilapidated shops sprouted from the earth, blooming into moldy wood and graffitied walls. Even the green bushes speckled with unhealthy reds. The only tree stood bent and dark, casting a shadow over two ancient benches: one rotted, one collapsed into planks. It wished it could have so merciful a death.
—Me

The boy plays as he picks through the gravel, half-walking and half-running, hand in mother’s hand. They do not look at the photographer. He is photographing the paved roads, the motorbikes humming through, the knockoff American stores. Unlike him, they can only dream of America. Each house is a motley of iron sheets and broad trees. The walls are graffitied, and so are the tires lying along telephone poles. And yet the trees are a flower’s red and orange. Despite everything, it is home.
—gameon12321

Rocks formed the sidewalks littered with leaves and trash. Lush trees and colorful shrubs struggled to pump life into the town. Walls of homemade huts held up tin roofs and begged for death. The nearby shops were dark and barren. They reeked of damp wood and loneliness. No service today. No service tomorrow.
—joe_g89

A convenience store sat across the road. The pebble sidewalk edged the road so harshly, like a cliff eroded by a wave of blenders. That store’s sign.. its lettering and its sign. It mocked us. What kind of rich fool would put that barely-gated chest of wealth near here? It was an insult. The palm trees and high grass around it only lit its spotlight brighter. “Rob me!” it begged. “Challenge me!” Its gate was not electrified. Just short. Do not. Walk. Into. A prison. With keys to the cells…
—JebusDota

Colored misery, bright, flaking paint, does naught to hide the dreary taint, to which all abides. Broken stretches of tarmac, less a road, and more a dirt track. Careless grass and rough stone, litter this polluted zone. A rundown store lies uncertain, open, yet showered in shadow, a dead business, to draw the curtain on this cursed, forgotten town. Graffiti serves – a painted medium, for the suffering, sad, sick of the tedium. These rotting homes will find no peace. No aid will come; no sweet release.
