The Birthday Cake Writing Challenges!

Three slices of birthday cake.

Three writing challenges to put your skills to the test.

It’s time for the Birthday Cake Writing Challenges!

During the last stream, since it was Abbey and mine’s birthday, we did the Birthday Cake Writing Challenges.

Similar to the last times we did writing triathlons, we had three rounds where chat could participate. Each round tested a different writing skill, and the judges were myself, Abbey, and a strawpoll too. At the end of all three challenges, the winners with the most points got to pick fabulous prizes!

You can watch the full thing here or scroll down for highlights.
(36:00 for Metl 2 announcement, 50:20 for Hype Train, 2:14 for cake smash)

Challenge #1: Write the first sentence of a story from the cake’s POV

Here’s some of the highlights for this challenge:

When I saw the fat kid, I phoned my wife and kids and told them I wouldn’t be coming home.
—joe_g89 (my pick)

Is it nobler to suffer the teeth and nibbles of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a huge throat, and by opposing choke them?
—swords (Abbey’s pick)

In the heat of the oven, I would rise; in the hands of my creator I would be perfected.
—bobicus (chat’s pick)

The view from the supermarket shelf was hopeful at first.
—Mezz (chat’s pick)

It was on this day that Joseph the Japanese-style cheesecake first questioned the notion of free will among pastries.
—SIXSIXseve_n (chat’s pick)

Challenge #2: Describe a slice of cake as vividly as you can

Here’s some of the highlights for this challenge:

My cake is soaked in sepia, a faded memory sitting on the plate before me. I held a delicate cake fork in my hand, cleaved a slice in two and brought an airy piece to my mouth. Yams grounded a saccharine-sweet frosting, pulling forth memories of Thanksgivings past.
—bobicus (my pick)

Take a bite, and revel! There’s a soft, sweet frosting oozing from the top of a friendly sponge, full of sweetness. It’s delight and pleasure rolled into one, light in the mouth and easy on the throat. Taste the new sensation, and let your senses indulge in a journey to highest heaven.
—Swords (Abbey’s pick)

The brown-sugared rose sat nestled upon the crown of the cake, feasting my eyes like a Thanksgiving feast. My fork slid through the cake layers as if they were clouds, sending a sugary mist into the air and onto my awaiting tongue. I never imagined breaking my diet would ever be so sweet.
—EricaDeel (chat’s pick)

The lemony aroma of the cloud-white pastry wafted into my nose, swirling off the cyclone of frosting. The tantalizing traces of almond whispered tasty promises and kicked my salivary glands into high gear.
—ZionXCX (chat’s pick)

Challenge #3: Write a haiku about Scott/Abbey smashing cake into each others’ faces

Here’s some of the highlights for this challenge:

Super brash cake smash
A husband-and-wife duet
Of melodic frosting-sweat
—EricaDeel (my pick)

Maw agape in roar
A lion amongst men
Cake devoured like it was zebra
—justintoons (Abbey’s pick)

It dripped down my tongue, flavors comingeling in the cheese emulsion. Viscous, garlicky, and thick with the inimitable taste of cheddar, this was unlike any pizza I had ever dreamt of.
—bobicus (chat’s pick)

Masterpiece destroyed
Sugar clogging pores on face
Tomorrow — pimples
—SIXSIXseve_n (chat’s pick)

Lo, the King of Cakes
Robe of White and Crown deep Red
Becomes the Jester’s Makeup
—cozyrogers (chat’s pick)

Food Fight
Wedded Bliss
Frost don’t get me cross or you’ll be icing
—kittyashley (chat’s pick)
