METL HYPE WEEK: How I Got a Literary Agent

My book Metl: The ANGEL Weapon is coming out next week, on March 5th!

To celebrate, each stream leading up to the release will be about my process writing and/or publishing the book.

So let’s get started with one of the most important steps along the journey: how I got a literary agent.

During the last stream, we went over how I got a literary agent.

It was a long, harrowing journey to get there, and it involved many drafts of my query letter. But I did something different for my query letter for Metl. Instead of writing it after I’d finished the book, I wrote it before I even started.

Why did I do that? And what did I learn from it? And just how many drafts of the query did I go through? Find out by watching the video below!

There’s way too much that we went over for a summary,
so watch the video here for my query adventure.

After that, we did the 7x7x7 exercise for a prompt. Chat picked a bunch of books, opened up to the 7th page, found the 7th sentence, and then shared them. Then we voted on one to write a 7-line story with.

Of course, with today’s stream being Metl, the 7th sentence on the 7th page of Metl was the winner: “The ten-year-old girl next to Caden had been missing her right hand ever since she showed up as a toddler.”

Here’s what we came up with: (which was 7 lines in my word processor)

The ten-year-old girl next to Caden had been missing her right hand ever since she showed up as a toddler. She didn’t speak with any of the other child gladiators, keeping to herself in the corner of their chamber. The kids weren’t allowed to watch any fights except their own, where they were busy fighting for their lives, so no one had any idea how she had survived for so long. All they knew was that she came back bloodier than any of them.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:30pm-10:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

And you missed the stream, you can still watch them on the YouTube channel or watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!

Scott Wilson is the author of the novel Metl: The ANGEL Weapon,
forthcoming March 2019.
