Writing a Gritty Romantic War Story

Writing good romance is hard. More than any other genre, you have to crank up your descriptions and characterization to the max. No one will care about amorphous blobs macking on each other, they want humans!

And writing a romance story that takes place right after a war adds a whole other challenge to the equation.

During the last stream, chat voted that we write this prompt: Your main character and their significant other have been together since childhood. After a war between their people rips them away from each other, they’ll have to fight, manipulate, and fool in order to get each other back.

Since we’ve never really written romance on stream before, we decided to give it a serious tackle. Could we tug at our readers’ heartstrings?

I think we succeeded.

You can even see how we changed up the ending!

You can read the story on Wattpad here.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 7:30pm-11:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

And you missed the stream, you can still watch them on the YouTube channel, or watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!
