Writing a Story in the 2nd-Person Future Tense

3rd person past tense? “He said/she ran?” Yawn. Been there, done that, it’s been written a billion times.

1st person present tense? “I say/I run?” Enh. Every young adult book does this nowadays.

2nd person future tense? “You will say/you will run?” …now you’re writing with fire, baby!

During the last stream, we decided to put a restriction on our writing prompt. Chat voted between a bunch of restrictions, and the winner was: write the story in 2nd person future tense. That means that everything in the story had to be phrased like: “You will go to the store, you will not have enough money, you will rob the cashier.”

Of course you basically never want to write a story like this, but it was a fun experiment!

Chat voted that we write this prompt with that restriction, created by DarwinBurrSirr: It is your last day on Earth. Your death is arriving when the sun sets. As you wake up you hear the doorbell. When you answer the door, you’re met with the person you could’ve become, and not what you became.

You can read our story here.

Or you can watch a quick video
of us writing/reading it here.

If you want to join us and help write a story by trolling in chat, or share your own writing for feedback, then we’d love to have you. We stream on Twitch every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 7:30pm-11:30pm (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

And you missed the stream, you can still watch them on the YouTube channel, or watch the full stream reruns.

Hope to see you next time, friend!
